Afghanistan Fundraiser

The story behind the fundraiser...

In the summer of 2007, AWSDA members Carol Montoya, Sheila Haddad and Leni De Goeyse went to the Afghanistan to teach women's self defense to women who desperately needed to learn how to protect themselves.

During their trip they met a woman named Vida Faizi. She is involved with Medica Mondiale, a human rights organization of women for women who help traumatized women in war and war zones. Their main activities in Afghanistan include capacity building, trainings and direct support to women in the psychological, medical, legal, and women’s rights fields.

Vida's colleague, Humaira Ameer Rasuli, is the program manager for the psychosocial projects of Medica Mondiale Afghanistan. She is very motivated and would like to participate as well as to give a presentation at this year's AWSDA seminar. She would like to share her knowledge about the current women's situation in Afghanistan, particularly in regards to the experiences with traumatized women and girls who are survivors of violence. Humaira has the ability to bring AWSDA training back to the women who need it most in the Middle East. However, the only way she will be able to attend this conference is with your help. Earnings in her country are far below what we would consider poverty or bare subsistence levels. In many cases, professionals only earn the equivalent of about $200 US dollars a month.

AWSDA is asking for help in order to fundraise money. Even a $5 dollar donation will make a difference. Ask a friend or a family member to help contribute and you'll be surprised just how much money you can raise. Many members are already in the process of holding fundraisers.
